A police pursuit on Saturday ended with Kaila Tapia, 32, crashing her vehicle through a backyard swing set and subsequently being arrested. The incident began when officers responded to a welfare check in a parking lot, observing drugs and drug paraphernalia in Tapia's vehicle. She then fled at high speed, reaching over 100 mph.
The chase continued westbound on C.R. 26 before Tapia turned south on C.R. 11, driving through a residential backyard and damaging a swing set. The vehicle's engine began smoking, leading to its halt. Tapia was arrested at gunpoint.
Tapia allegedly admitted to fleeing because of outstanding warrants for meth possession and theft. Police found methamphetamine, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and stolen baseball cards in her vehicle. She is charged with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of paraphernalia, and leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held on $100,000 bond, with an initial court hearing set for Tuesday.
