A vast international drug smuggling operation, financed by investors in Dubai, has been dismantled by Spanish police. The multiyear investigation, a joint effort with Ecuador's National Police and overseen by Europol, resulted in the arrest of 44 individuals.
Authorities confiscated an immense 21 tons of cocaine during the operation. The smuggling ring primarily used shipping containers to move the drugs from South America to Spain, concealing them amongst legitimate commercial goods. Initial arrests occurred in March 2025, with Ecuadorian police detaining 36 suspects and raiding numerous properties.
Following the busts in Ecuador, Spanish police apprehended eight additional suspects. In addition to the massive drug seizure, authorities also confiscated 1 million euros in Spain. The smugglers predominantly utilized the port of Guayaquil for shipments, often hiding narcotics within shipments of bananas destined for Europe.
