Federal prosecutors have charged Junwei Guo, 27, from San Francisco, for allegedly flying a drone in restricted airspace over Levi's Stadium. The incident occurred during a November 9th game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams.
The Federal Aviation Administration mandates temporary flight restrictions for stadiums exceeding 30,000 in capacity during NFL events. These restrictions ban all aircraft within a three-nautical-mile radius.
Guo's drone allegedly reached altitudes of 2,300 feet, raising significant public safety and air traffic control concerns. He reportedly failed to register his drone, obtain a remote pilot's certificate, or comply with recreational use exceptions.
An initial court appearance for Guo is scheduled for February 27th in San Jose. In preparation for the Super Bowl, the FAA and FBI have established a 'No Drone Zone' around Levi's Stadium and implemented drone restrictions in downtown San Francisco.
