A 79-year-old man has been given a suspended prison sentence for a dangerous overtaking maneuver that left a cyclist with a broken collarbone. The incident took place in April 2023 on a single-track country lane in Northumberland. John Rice, who was reportedly rushing home from a tennis game, clipped the cyclist as he approached a sharp bend.
The victim told Newcastle Crown Court that the injury had caused "constant pain" and profoundly changed his life. Rice, a retired accountant and prominent community member, denied the charge but was convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He received a one-year jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to pay £4,830 in court costs.
