- Two drink-drivers intentionally rammed a family's car at 60mph.
- The collision killed a four-year-old boy and paralyzed his father.
- The perpetrators were jailed for over 12 and 18 years respectively.

Two men have been sentenced to significant prison terms for a fatal road incident on the A2 in Kent. Owen Maughan, 27, and his father Patrick Maughan, 54, were jailed for their roles in intentionally ramming a family's car while driving under the influence of alcohol. The deliberate collision occurred on June 1, 2025, at approximately 9:30 PM.
The actions of Owen and Patrick Maughan resulted in the death of their four-year-old cousin, Peter, who was thrown from the vehicle and sustained unsurvivable injuries. Peter's father, Lovell Mahon, suffered severe trauma, including a skull fracture, and is now paralyzed and will never walk again. The family had consumed a substantial amount of alcohol before the chase and subsequent crash.
During a trial, Owen Maughan pleaded guilty to manslaughter, while Patrick Maughan was convicted of the same charge by a jury. They were cleared of murder. The court heard evidence of a high-speed pursuit, with dashcam footage capturing the aggressive exchanges between the drivers. The judge described their actions as "selfish" anger that "irretrievably shattered" lives.
Owen Maughan received a sentence of over 12 years, and Patrick Maughan was sentenced to over 18 years. After the collision, the men sped away from the scene, with Patrick Maughan allegedly removing their vehicle's number plate. They were apprehended within two days of the incident. Hayley Maughan, Peter's mother, described the devastating impact on the family, stating they are now "surviving, not living."
