15 Aug
Summary
- Husband and mother-in-law received 12-year sentences for dowry death.
- Deceased was pregnant, losing both her life and her unborn child.
- Court cited continuous cruelty and persistent dowry demands.
A recent ruling by a Delhi court has highlighted the ongoing issue of dowry-related harassment. A husband and his mother were each sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for dowry death.
This sentence follows the suicide of a young woman who was approximately 10 weeks pregnant at the time of her death on June 3, 2021. She had married Nitesh Kashyap on March 15, 2021.
The court found a direct link between the deceased's death and dowry demands. She reportedly faced continuous harassment for items including a motorcycle, Rs 30,000 for an air conditioner, and gold articles.
Additional Sessions Judge Priya Mahendra emphasized that the actions of the husband and mother-in-law resulted in the loss of two lives. The court dismissed claims questioning the woman's fidelity, deeming it a final catalyst for a woman already suffering severe dowry-related abuse.
Judge Mahendra expressed deep regret over the persistence of dowry deaths in Indian society, noting that women are not spared even after marriage due to their parents' inability to meet dowry expectations. The court deemed the mother-son duo undeserving of mercy.
