A donkey sanctuary near Penrith, Cumbria, is facing an overwhelming crisis due to a sudden surge in abandoned animals, many arriving with horrific injuries and abuse. Since December, nine donkeys have been dumped at Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, exhibiting unprecedented levels of physical and mental harm.

Vet Sam Galloway reported that most of the nine donkeys showed signs of severe disease, with some not responding to care. Linda Gilbert, who opened the sanctuary in 2003, described the abuse as the worst she has ever witnessed. The animals suffer from skin and liver diseases, eye problems, and foot issues, with some displaying strikingly similar injuries.
