Donkey Sanctuary Overwhelmed by Cruel Abuse Cases
12 Mar
Summary
- Donkey sanctuary struggles with a surge of dumped animals.
- Many animals arrived with horrendous injuries and severe diseases.
- Rising costs and abandonment strain sanctuary resources.

A donkey sanctuary near Penrith, Cumbria, is facing an overwhelming crisis due to a sudden surge in abandoned animals, many arriving with horrific injuries and abuse. Since December, nine donkeys have been dumped at Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, exhibiting unprecedented levels of physical and mental harm.
Vet Sam Galloway reported that most of the nine donkeys showed signs of severe disease, with some not responding to care. Linda Gilbert, who opened the sanctuary in 2003, described the abuse as the worst she has ever witnessed. The animals suffer from skin and liver diseases, eye problems, and foot issues, with some displaying strikingly similar injuries.
In January, four donkeys were found at the sanctuary gates, one with a severe eye injury. The following month, another four were abandoned, including a mother and daughter suffering from critical liver and foot diseases. A further female donkey arrived in March in a skeletal state. The sanctuary has run out of stable space and is extending facilities, but feed costs have quadrupled while other bills have also rocketed.
The RSPCA acknowledges seeing worrying levels of animal abandonment and neglect, including horses, ponies, and donkeys. They suggest that rising costs for equine essentials like hay, feed, and veterinary care may tragically compel some individuals to abandon their animals, but emphasize that dumping is never the solution.
