Dog Rescue Owner Jailed for 5 Years Amidst Filth
20 Feb
Summary
- Owner jailed for five years for horrific animal cruelty.
- 41 dog carcasses found in bins, outbuildings, and gardens.
- Surviving dogs severely underweight and traumatized by conditions.

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for operating a squalid animal rescue centre where 41 dog carcasses were discovered. Oaveed Rahman, 27, received his sentence after admitting to cruelty and fraud charges.
The investigation into the 'Save A Paw' centre in Crays Hill, Essex, began after concerns were raised via Action Fraud. A police raid on May 13 last year uncovered appalling conditions, with dog remains found in bins, outbuildings, and gardens. The site was infested with maggots and rats, and surviving dogs were severely underweight.
Rahman accepted thousands of pounds from owners who entrusted him with their pets, promising regular updates that he failed to provide. The court heard he was on remand since his arrest last year. He was given a 38-month term for cruelty and a consecutive 22 months for fraud. A concurrent three-year sentence was imposed for owning an unlicensed XL Bully.
Victim impact statements highlighted the deep distress caused to owners who lost their pets. One owner, Emma Thompson, described her dalmatian pointer cross, Lennon, as being 'extremely traumatised' before his death. Campaigners also expressed concerns that other animals, including exotic species, might be unaccounted for, fearing a larger death toll.
