Dodgers Owner Walter Faces Federal Fraud Probe

Mark Walter, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers, is currently under federal investigation. The probe is examining whether his Guggenheim Partners empire engaged in fraud related to private-credit deals, with an employee reportedly flagging suspicious revenue booking.

Compounding these issues are concerns about Walter's health. In July 2024, during the Dodgers' pursuit of the World Series, he reportedly suffered a stroke. His recovery was difficult, with some executives and investors noting a perceived decline in his mental sharpness.

Despite these challenges, other sources suggest Walter's health emergency has not affected his business decision-making. Walter has largely been a hands-off owner since the $2.15 billion purchase of the Dodgers, delegating operations to Stan Kasten and Andrew Friedman.

Walter's public appearances have become infrequent. He was notably absent from the Dodgers' 2024 World Series trophy presentation in New York but was present for their 2025 win in Toronto. He has experienced some public speaking fumbles, including a misstatement regarding relief efforts and confusion during a prepared speech at the White House in April 2025 and again in July 2026.

Walter's sports portfolio is extensive, including a controlling stake in the Lakers acquired in 2024, ownership of the WNBA's Sparks, a Formula 1 racing team, a partial stake in Chelsea Football Club, and the founding of the Professional Women's Hockey League.
