Doctor Flees UK, Struck Off Medical Register
20 May
Summary
- Oncologist jailed for coercion has been erased from the medical register.
- He fled the country, resulting in an outstanding arrest warrant.
- Doctor showed no insight into his serious, persistent actions.

Oncologist Shamir Chandran has been struck off the medical register due to fears he poses a public risk. Chandran was sentenced in absentia to four years in prison for coercive behaviour and cruelty to a minor, with an arrest warrant now outstanding. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service determined his conviction impaired his fitness to practice, citing a lack of insight and a risk of future harm.
Chandran, formerly of Houghton, near Carlisle, and previously employed at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital, denied the charges and did not participate in his criminal or tribunal proceedings, having fled the UK. The tribunal found his actions particularly serious due to their persistent, premeditated nature and financial exploitation of a vulnerable victim.
Chandran qualified in India in 2001. Correspondence indicated he felt unfairly treated in the UK and was working in a private practice abroad. The MPTS concluded that due to his lack of remorse and the potential for him to repeat his actions, he presented an ongoing risk to public protection.
