Doctor's Fabricated CV Leads to Striking Off
4 Nov
Summary
- Doctor fabricated entire CV, including fake job titles and awards.
- No patients were harmed, deemed 'fortuitous' by tribunal.
- Doctor was removed from medical register immediately.
A doctor working for an NHS trust has been removed from the medical register due to a "wholesale fabrication" of his curriculum vitae. Dr. Tochukwu Akah admitted to over 20 false claims on his application, including pretending to hold a chief medical officer role in Nigeria and fabricating academic awards. He also falsely claimed to have published research and performed complex medical procedures.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunals Service (MPTS) noted that it was "fortuitous" that no patients at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust suffered harm. Akah worked as a clinical fellow in haematology from September 2024. His employment was terminated after hospital colleagues raised concerns, leading to a report to the General Medical Council in May 2025.
The tribunal concluded that Akah's CV was a complete fabrication to secure employment. Despite the lack of evidence of patient harm, the panel stated that patients were exposed to significant risk. Akah is not currently working in the UK or for any NHS trust.
