Whistleblower's Warning on Jailed Surgeon Unheeded
26 Oct
Summary
- A doctor warned management about Ian Paterson's alarming patient care.
- Colleagues advised the doctor against working with Paterson.
- Paterson told the doctor he didn't want anyone 'rocking the boat'.
A doctor who attempted to raise concerns about jailed surgeon Ian Paterson's practices was reportedly ignored by his colleagues and management. Dr. Hemant Ingle, who joined Solihull Hospital in late 2006, stated that Paterson was unwelcoming and dismissive of his appointment.
Ingle became alarmed by the condition of patients treated by Paterson, including Marie Pinfield, who had undergone two unnecessary double mastectomies. Ingle noted these procedures were not consistent with standard medical protocols for cancer treatment.
Despite reporting his concerns, Ingle claimed Paterson asserted control over the breast unit, stating he did not want "anyone rocking the boat." University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust later acknowledged that many of Paterson's patients received "appalling treatment."
Inquests into the deaths of 70 patients treated by Ian Paterson are ongoing and are expected to continue until Spring 2028, to determine if their deaths were unnatural as a result of his care.
