A doctor practicing in Paschim Vihar, Delhi, was recently targeted in an extortion scheme orchestrated by one of his patients. The suspect, identified as Himanshu Jain, 35, contacted the doctor on October 1, posing as an associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Jain demanded a sum of Rs 25 lakh, threatening harm if the money was not paid. Fortunately, the doctor alerted the police, who initiated an investigation. The police advised the doctor to maintain contact with the suspect and record their conversations. They traced the calls and set a trap.
The following day, Jain instructed the doctor to deliver the money near Jaipur Golden Hospital in Rohini. A police team was deployed, and CCTV footage aided in identifying the suspect. Jain was apprehended on the spot as he arrived to collect the payment. DCP (Outer) Vikram Singh confirmed the swift arrest, which occurred within hours of the initial complaint. The suspect, Jain, had been a patient of the doctor for three years, seeking treatment for a skin infection. During this time, he gathered personal information about the doctor's routine and finances, believing he could afford the hefty ransom.
Jain allegedly purchased a new SIM card to make the extortion call, aiming to lend credibility to his threats by providing personal details. Investigations revealed that Himanshu Jain has a prior criminal record, with two cases registered against him. One case from 2018 involved sections related to extortion and criminal intimidation, and a similar case was filed in 2020. The investigation into this latest incident is ongoing.
