Tomasz Roman Kosowski, a plastic surgeon with advanced degrees from Ivy League institutions, stands accused of murdering lawyer Steven Cozzi. Kosowski allegedly killed Cozzi in a Clearwater law office restroom and disposed of the body. The doctor, who immigrated from Poland as a child, rose from humble beginnings to excel academically, earning degrees from the University of New Mexico and Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine, alongside an MBA from the Tuck School of Business.

Kosowski's career, once lauded for pioneering techniques in plastic surgery, took a dark turn. He became embroiled in a contentious lawsuit with Cozzi, who represented a defendant. Tensions escalated, culminating in a confrontation where Kosowski allegedly threatened Cozzi shortly before the lawyer's disappearance. Investigators placed Kosowski's phone at Cozzi's law office during the time of his disappearance, and Cozzi's DNA was found in Kosowski's truck.

As his murder trial begins, Kosowski has chosen to represent himself, expressing a desire for the judge to determine his guilt and sentence, even indicating he does not wish to present evidence that might argue against capital punishment. Cozzi's body has never been recovered, though a garbage truck driver reported a foul smell near where his remains were allegedly dumped. Kosowski maintains his innocence throughout the proceedings.
