A New York judge has thrown out Sean "Diddy" Combs' $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal. The ruling on February 25, 2025, came from Empire State Supreme Court judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond.
Judge Perry-Bond stated that the "Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy" documentary on Peacock could not have caused public scorn, as Combs' reputation was already significantly tarnished by numerous lawsuits, a domestic violence video, extensive press coverage, and a federal indictment prior to the documentary's release.
The documentary, which debuted on January 14, 2025, less than six months after Combs' federal arrest, examined allegations of violence and abuse, as well as his potential involvement in the deaths of Notorious B.I.G. and Kim Porter.
In her order on Wednesday, the judge highlighted that Combs' legal team failed to establish a substantial basis for reputational harm. She also noted the film was "carefully curated and nuanced," presenting interviewees' biases and counterstatements.
Combs' representatives declined to comment, while NBCUniversal's lawyer Ted Boutrous Jr. called the ruling "important" for protecting filmmakers and journalists. Separately, Combs' appeal concerning his criminal sentencing for prostitution charges is pending before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, with a decision not yet public.
