Detroit police strictly enforced an 8 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors in downtown areas on fireworks night. Officers began detaining individuals 17 years old and younger who were without a parent or guardian shortly after the curfew took effect. These minors had their hands secured with plastic zip ties and were escorted to buses operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation.
Parents were subsequently contacted to pick up their children from Cadillac Square. This curfew ordinance was approved by the City Council on June 16. While the ordinance is not new, the early 8 p.m. start time was implemented amid concerns over disruptive teen gatherings. The curfew was set to be in effect from 8 p.m. on June 22 to 6 a.m. on June 23, requiring adult accompaniment for minors in approved public viewing areas.
The curfew's designated zone encompassed a significant portion of the downtown area, bordered by the Detroit River, Third Street, the Lodge Freeway (M-10), and I-75, among other streets. Minors were permitted to travel to and from essential activities such as school, work, or religious services, or to attend organized events.
