Detective Warned of Killer Before Wrongful Conviction
20 Apr
Summary
- Former detective alerted superiors to escalating attacks before a murder.
- His warnings were reportedly ignored, leading to the wrong conviction.
- New DNA evidence freed a man after 38 years of wrongful imprisonment.

A former detective has revealed he warned his superiors about a series of violent attacks and rapes preceding the murder of Diane Sindall in Birkenhead. He claims his concerns about escalating violence and a potential serial offender were dismissed by senior detectives.
Despite the officer's persistence in investigating similar cases, he was reportedly told to return the files and drop the matter. Tragically, just days later, Diane Sindall was found murdered on August 2, 1986.
Peter Sullivan, dubbed the "Beast of Birkenhead," was subsequently convicted of the murder and spent 38 years in prison. This case represents one of the longest miscarriages of justice in British history.
Sullivan's release only occurred in 2023 after DNA profiling from semen samples at the crime scene identified an unknown man. Merseyside Police stated that while they are reviewing offences, they currently lack evidence linking the Sindall murder to other prior incidents, apart from one attack on Borough Road.
