Detainee Escapes After Stabbing Guards in Unmodified People Mover
27 Feb
Summary
- Detainee allegedly stabbed two staff and fled in an unmodified Kia Carnival.
- Nearly 500 detention staff raised safety concerns about transport vehicles.
- Home affairs department intervened over the use of unsafe people movers.

An alleged stabbing and escape incident occurred when a detainee used an unmodified Kia Carnival to flee while being transported. The vehicle reportedly lacked essential safety modifications like Perspex barriers to protect staff. This event has amplified existing concerns raised by detention centre staff.
In September of last year, 483 detention centre workers submitted an open letter to the Australian Border Force detailing safety issues. They specifically cited inadequate transport and escort vehicles, including the use of unmodified 'people-mover' style vehicles. The United Workers Union has also expressed awareness of these issues, consistently raising them with both MTC and the department.
The home affairs department has acknowledged these concerns and has intervened regarding the suitability of vehicles used by the private operator, Secure Journeys, a subsidiary of MTC. While the department cannot dictate daily vehicle use, it holds MTC accountable for contractual and work health and safety obligations. Some vehicles have since undergone modifications, with barriers being added.
