According to the family, police failed to identify Vartak or ensure his safety, allegedly allowing him to leave the station unattended. His family continued their search, unaware he had been briefly at the police station. His body was found near railway tracks in Virar West on Sunday night.
A preliminary autopsy indicated Vartak died from a combination of diabetes, heatstroke, and starvation. Police have registered an accidental death report and are investigating potential foul play. The family has directly blamed police officers for their duty of care failures.
