Delhi Police recently apprehended a 19-year-old individual in an inter-state operation for orchestrating a sophisticated QR code fraud. The accused, identified as Manish Verma, is alleged to have manipulated a clothing store's QR code in Chandni Chowk, diverting Rs 1.4 lakh in digital payments.
Verma reportedly used AI-powered image-editing applications to replace the store's legitimate bank details with his own while maintaining the QR code's original appearance. This tactic aimed to deceive customers into believing they were making valid transactions. The funds were then rapidly moved to avoid traceability.
The investigation was initiated after the store reported missing payments, leading authorities to trace the financial trail to Rajasthan. The accused confessed that his scamming method was inspired by scenes from the South Indian film 'Vettaiyan'. Authorities seized over 100 edited QR codes and various digital devices.
