Delhi Metro Safety Under Scrutiny After Appeal
10 Mar
Summary
- Man convicted for masturbating on Delhi Metro upheld by court.
- Court emphasizes need for stronger women's safety measures.
- Victim's testimony crucial despite minor discrepancies.

A man's conviction for masturbating next to a woman on a Delhi Metro coach has been upheld by a court, which also called for enhanced safety measures on public transport. The additional sessions judge emphasized the ongoing concerns for women's safety in public spaces, particularly on International Women's Day.
The court dismissed the appeal of Mohd Tahir, confirming the trial court's decision based on sections of the Indian Penal Code addressing crimes against women's modesty. Tahir was apprehended after the complainant pressed an emergency button during the March 27, 2021, incident.
The sessions court observed that offenses like these can cause significant psychological trauma, violating a victim's privacy and security. While commending the existing metro security, the judge stressed that more needs to be done for women's safety.
Tahir's appeal, citing lack of independent witnesses and CCTV footage, was dismissed as a red herring, with the court giving credence to the complainant's repeated accounts of the appellant's behavior.
