Delhi Urinal Battle: Court Orders Demolition
6 Sep
Summary
- A Delhi resident battled for 1.5 years to remove a garbage dump and urinal.
- The court ordered the demolition of the illegal structures within four weeks.
- The ruling created division among residents regarding sanitation needs.
In Old Delhi's Sitaram Bazar, a 99-year-old home and its resident faced unbearable conditions due to a persistent garbage dump and an open men's urinal. For over a year and a half, the resident, Rachit Gupta, a lawyer, endured the foul stench and unhygienic environment, finding it difficult to even use his balcony.
Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court intervened, ordering the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to demolish both the illegal garbage dump and the urinal within four weeks. The court also instructed the civic body to provide a covered dustbin for dry and wet waste, placed at a suitable distance from Gupta's home.
This judicial order has created a rift among the local community. While residents living near the structures support the demolition due to health concerns and embarrassment, others, like local ironsmith Ismail, argue that demolishing the urinal without an immediate alternative leaves many dependent on it without access to sanitation. Tensions have reportedly risen, with threats exchanged between opposing groups regarding the future of the sanitation facility.
