Authorities have apprehended a 28-year-old man from Alwar, Rajasthan, in connection with the creation and dissemination of deepfake videos featuring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The arrest followed searches by two Tamil Nadu Police Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) teams in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The accused, identified as Shyabu Khan, had his mobile phones, SIM cards, and CPUs seized.
The CB-CID registered cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act after deepfake videos of the Chief Minister with Hindi audio emerged on Facebook and other social media platforms last month. Initial findings suggest these videos were used to defraud individuals across Madhya Pradesh and other regions.
An ongoing investigation aims to identify foreign perpetrators involved, despite operational challenges. Police are also examining whether Khan operated independently or as part of a broader network. Facebook has been requested to remove the circulated videos.
