Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, 23, has been found guilty of murder following a brutal attack on a pedestrian near Leicester Royal Infirmary. The incident occurred on June 24 of last year, when Ahanonu, who had been driving erratically and dangerously through the city centre, crashed his vehicle.
Moments after the crash, Ahanonu attacked Nila Patel, 56, stamping on her head. Security officers from the nearby infirmary intervened and restrained him until police arrived. Tragically, Ms. Patel sustained critical injuries, including a fractured skull and brain damage, succumbing to her injuries two days later in hospital.
Upon his arrest, Ahanonu was found to be in possession of cannabis and dealer bags. He had previously admitted to manslaughter but denied the murder charge, asserting diminished responsibility. A jury at Leicester Crown Court rejected this defense, delivering a guilty verdict for murder. Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday.
