Inmate Attack Kills Corrections Officer at Virginia Prison

On November 17, 2025, a corrections officer was killed in a violent attack by an inmate at the River North Correctional Center in Grayson County, Virginia. The incident occurred at 7:53 a.m. that morning. The injured officer was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Another officer was also attacked during the incident and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has stated that the River North Correctional Center is currently secure.
VADOC's Office of Law Enforcement Services is continuing to investigate the attack. "Our agency and the entire Commonwealth are in mourning today," said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. "Our hearts are with the Officer's family, the other Officer who was attacked, and to our public safety heroes at River North. The VADOC will do everything in its power to ensure this vicious attack is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
