Hospital Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Critical
18 Jun
Summary
- Hospital employee shot two colleagues, killing one.
- Suspect arrested after a six-hour manhunt.
- Workplace violence is a growing concern in healthcare.

A shooting at Wilmington Hospital on Tuesday afternoon left one employee dead and another in critical condition. The suspect, 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey, was an employee at ChristianaCare and is now in custody, facing charges including murder and attempted murder.
The incident triggered a hospital-wide lockdown as SWAT teams searched for Wallace-Bey, who was eventually apprehended in Philadelphia after a six-hour manhunt. He was found in possession of a firearm and is awaiting extradition to Delaware.
Colleagues described the atmosphere at the hospital on Wednesday as somber but supportive, with many returning to work despite the trauma. Healthcare workers, who are statistically at higher risk for workplace violence, are being offered counseling services.
The shooting has also renewed focus on hospital security. While metal detectors and advanced weapon detection technology are becoming more common, there is no universal federal mandate for hospital security. Past incidents at other Philadelphia-area hospitals underscore the ongoing challenges.
