A man in Ontario has been sentenced to an additional three years in prison following a fatal crash that occurred in Clearview Township in September 2023. The driver, Dan Richie, 36, was convicted of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. Moments before the crash, Richie was traveling at a speed of 173 km/h.
Richie ran a stop sign while driving at excessive speed, leading to a collision that tragically killed Katie Marshall. Marshall's husband, Brody, and their five children were also in Richie's vehicle at the time of the incident. Brody Marshall sustained life-threatening injuries, and the court heard extensive victim impact statements detailing the devastating physical and psychological trauma inflicted upon the family.
Justice Jocelyn Speyer sentenced Richie to a total of four-and-a-half years, accounting for pre-sentence custody. The judge emphasized that Richie's actions were deliberate choices, not an accident. Richie, who had 11 prior speeding convictions, expressed remorse to the affected families. He will be banned from driving for 15 years upon his release.
