- Accused man charged with manslaughter, pleads not guilty
- Surveillance video shows escalation of verbal dispute to physical fight
On January 24, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the parking lot of a Winnipeg restaurant, Cork & Flame, that has now led to a manslaughter trial. According to the evidence presented in court, 51-year-old Kyriakos Vogiatzakis, the owner of the restaurant, confronted 38-year-old Curtis Ross Dalebozik in the parking lot, leading to a physical altercation between the two men.
Surveillance footage played in court showed the entire incident, with prosecutors arguing that Dalebozik used excessive force once he gained the upper hand in the fight. The video depicts Vogiatzakis assaulting Dalebozik before the latter was able to grab Vogiatzakis and pull him to the ground. Dalebozik then delivered several strikes to Vogiatzakis's head and torso while holding him down, eventually putting him in a headlock.
Thirty seconds after the headlock, Vogiatzakis's movements stopped, and Dalebozik got up and kicked him. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Vogiatzakis was pronounced dead at the hospital, having suffered from multiple blunt force trauma, asphyxiation, and the physiological stress of the altercation.
Dalebozik has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charges, and the trial is ongoing. The victim's family has expressed their grief and frustration with the justice system, stating that their lives have been "torn apart" by this devastating incident.
