Summary
- World champion Irish dancer Amie Donaghey convicted after ghost broker scam.
- Victim paid £700 for fake car insurance, facing prosecution.
- Scammers target young motorists with unbelievably low premiums.

A world champion Irish dancer, Amie Donaghey, has received a criminal conviction after falling victim to a sophisticated "ghost broker" scam. The 21-year-old mother of two was conned into believing she had valid car insurance, having paid £700 for a fake policy. This incident highlights a growing problem where "thousands of unsuspecting motorists" across the UK, particularly young drivers, are targeted by fraudsters offering unbelievably low insurance premiums.
Donaghey's fraudulent insurance only came to light when she was stopped by police in Londonderry. She discovered the policy was fake when contacted by the legitimate insurer she was falsely told she was covered by, and the "broker" subsequently vanished. Her defence solicitor has called for the prosecution service to reconsider pursuing cases against victims, arguing it is not in the public interest when clear evidence of fraud against the accused exists.
Statistics from Aviva reveal that ghost brokering is on the rise, with young drivers aged 17-25 being the primary target. The company noted that one suspected ghost broker earned approximately £150,000 selling fake car insurance. Police are warning motorists to be wary of deals that seem "too good to be true" and to always verify they are dealing with legitimate companies through official channels like the Financial Conduct Authority website.
