A shocking incident of caste discrimination occurred in Damoh district, India, where a 23-year-old physically handicapped Dalit groom was attacked during his 'Rachwai' pre-wedding procession.
On Tuesday evening, as the groom, Golu Ahirwar, was riding a horse in Bijori Pathak village, a group of villagers reportedly objected to his presence on horseback. They allegedly used caste-based slurs, blocked the procession with a motorcycle, pulled the groom down, and assaulted him. The groom's family members, including his sister Manisha, intervened but were also beaten.
Following the attack, members of the Dalit community filed a complaint with the police, who registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police confirmed that all four named accused villagers have been arrested. Authorities have recommended invoking the National Security Act against them, a measure described as unprecedented for such a case.
Additional police forces have been deployed in Bijori Pathak village to maintain order. A video of the assault has circulated widely on social media, highlighting the brutality of the incident and sparking outrage.
