A five-year-old Cub Scout, identified as D.R., required emergency hospitalization and surgery after sustaining a broken thighbone and leg fracture during a meeting on December 4, 2025. The incident occurred at the Jadel Leadership Center in Toledo, Ohio, while pack leader Christopher Coakley was reportedly vaping outside, leaving only two other registered leaders to supervise the group. Court documents reveal that a 12-year-old boy allegedly kicked, stepped on, and punched D.R.
Following the assault, D.R. was rushed to the emergency room by his mother, Breanna Russell. Doctors determined the severity of his injuries necessitated emergency surgery, including the placement of flexible titanium elastic nails in his femur, followed by a hip cast that significantly limited his mobility. This has resulted in missed school days and the need for ongoing physical therapy. The lawsuit, filed by parents Breanna and Christopher Russell, seeks $25,000 in damages and a jury trial.
The Erie Shores Council expressed sincere concern and sympathy for the injured Cub Scout and his family. They stated that the safety of young participants is their highest priority and that they have been in communication with the family, offering assistance and guidance through the insurance process. Due to ongoing litigation, specific details are limited, but the council remains focused on supporting the youth, his family, and volunteers involved in providing a positive Scouting experience.
