2 Oct
Summary
- Businessman attacked with hammers by masked intruders in his home.
- Heavily pregnant wife threatened with death unless crypto transferred.
- Attackers escaped with crypto savings and luxury watches.
A Solihull businessman, referred to as James, and his heavily pregnant wife were subjected to a brutal 45-minute home invasion by masked intruders. The attackers forcibly entered their residence, physically assaulted James with hammers, and threatened to kill his wife and unborn child if he did not transfer a substantial amount of cryptocurrency.
During the December attack, the assailants held James's wife down, covering her face with a pillow, while demanding access to his digital assets. Guided by someone on a video call, they forced James to transfer hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cryptocurrency and also stole several Rolex watches.
This incident is an example of a growing trend known as "wrench attacks," where cryptocurrency investors are targeted with violent robberies. Reports of such attacks have surfaced globally, with France, the US, and Brazil identified as hotspots. Investigators note that unlike traditional financial assets, cryptocurrency can be difficult to recover once transferred, making holders attractive targets for criminals.
Police are actively investigating the incident, and Crimestoppers has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the masked attackers, the getaway driver, and the individual directing the theft via phone. The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, have emphasized the real dangers associated with cryptocurrency ownership.
