The investigation began on October 25th after a house fire at a Havelock-area residence revealed the body of 72-year-old Patricia Lopedote. Officials confirmed she had been stabbed and her home subsequently set on fire, with her vehicle also stolen. Connelly became a suspect after a subsequent encounter three days later.
During an attempt to apprehend Connelly at a Vanceboro restaurant, a deputy was stabbed in the leg.
