Toxic Beauty: Counterfeit Cosmetics Found With Mercury, Lead
30 Oct
Summary
- Counterfeit beauty products seized contained mercury, lead, and methanol.
- Over 16,000 fake hair extensions, cosmetics, and vapes were found.
- Four in ten seized cosmetics contained potentially harmful substances.
Trading standards officers recently discovered alarming levels of toxic substances, including mercury, lead, and methanol, within counterfeit beauty products. During a warehouse raid in Manchester last July, police seized 1,660 fake hair extensions, shampoos, and conditioners. In a separate operation in Bolton, officers confiscated fake perfume, cosmetics, clothing, and vapes valued at £2 million from a production base.
These findings highlight the growing concern over fake beauty products, which now rank among trading standards' top investigated fakes. Testing revealed extreme levels of contamination, such as 13,200 parts per million of mercury in a skincare item and a fragrance composed of approximately 80% methanol. These dangerous fakes, often produced in unhygienic conditions, bypass rigorous safety standards applied to legitimate products.
