Convicted Murderer Seeks Early Release After 29 Years in Jail

On November 7, 2025, the Jharkhand High Court directed the state government to file a response to a petition filed by Anil Sharma, a convict serving a life sentence at the Birsa Munda Central Jail. Sharma was convicted of the 1999 murder of Sudhir Kumar Singh, also known as Bhoma Singh, inside the jail.
Sharma was already incarcerated when, on January 22, 1999, he and his associates Bablu Srivastava, Niranjan Kumar Singh, Sushil Srivastava, and Madhu Miyan, stabbed Bhoma Singh to death. Bhoma Singh was a criminal who owed allegiance to Sharma's rival gangster, Surendra Singh Rautela, alias Bengali. The motive behind the murder was that one of Bengali's goons had tried to kill a member of Sharma's gang during a visit to the jail gate.
In his latest petition, Sharma has claimed that he has already spent 29 years in jail and is entitled to remission of his sentence. The case will be taken up by the court again after four weeks. The Jharkhand High Court had earlier converted Sharma's death sentence to life imprisonment on November 29, 2002.
