An inter-district conman, Krishna Murari Mishra, was apprehended by police in Azamgarh district on Saturday, December 28, 2025, after a suspicious encounter. Mishra had been deceiving women by posing as a religious figure and offering to perform rituals to ward off misfortune. He would gain entry into homes in rural areas, earn the trust of women, and then steal their valuable gold jewelry under the guise of worship.
During the arrest near Badagaon canal bridge, Mishra fired at the police team. In retaliatory firing, he sustained a leg injury and was subsequently taken into custody. The police successfully recovered jewelry valued at Rs1.25 lakh and Rs25,000 in cash from his possession. Illegal weapons and a motorcycle were also seized, indicating his preparedness for further criminal activities.
Mishra confessed to his modus operandi during interrogation, admitting to targeting women in rural areas and exploiting their beliefs. He would then flee with the stolen valuables, sell them, and relocate to evade law enforcement. An FIR has been registered against him, and he is receiving medical treatment for his injury.
