Gretchen Leanne Ryan, a Colorado mother, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her 16-year-old daughter's death. Prosecutors allege Ryan supplied her daughter with alcohol over several months, leading to fatal health complications.
Investigators discovered 173 empty alcohol bottles hidden in the teenager's room. Evidence suggests Ryan and her daughter regularly consumed alcohol and marijuana together, with communications indicating daily discussions about obtaining alcohol since September 2025.
Court filings reveal messages describing the daughter's severe symptoms, including vomiting blood and difficulty eating. The teen reportedly expressed fears of dying to her mother, but 911 was not called until the morning after her final message.
Autopsy results determined the cause of death was aspiration pneumonia related to chronic alcohol use. The manner of death was classified as natural due to voluntary alcohol consumption. Ryan was charged on May 15 and is being held on a $500,000 bond, with a preliminary hearing set for June 17.
