Baby's Death: Charges Reinstated in Colorado Motel 6 Case
27 May
Summary
- Murder charges reinstated for a Colorado man in a 10-month-old's death.
- Previous charges were dropped due to prosecutor's ethical violations.
- Appeals court ruled conduct didn't justify dismissing the charges.

Murder and child abuse charges have been reinstated against William Jacobs, who is accused of killing a 10-month-old baby in his care. The Colorado Court of Appeals reversed a lower court's decision to dismiss the case, which had been dropped in 2024. The original dismissal was based on remarks made by the former 11th Judicial District Attorney, Linda Stanley, in a media interview.
The appeals court determined that Stanley's conduct, though unethical, did not meet the high standard required for "outrageous government conduct." They stated her commentary did not influence the filing of charges. Stanley, who was later disbarred and removed from office, had publicly suggested Jacobs was watching the infant solely to pursue a sexual relationship with the child's mother.
Jacobs was arrested in May 2023 after the baby was found deceased at a Motel 6 in Cañon City. Court documents indicate Jacobs met the baby's mother at the motel where she worked and subsequently stayed in the same room where the infant died. During police questioning, Jacobs reportedly confessed to biting the baby and causing head trauma while attempting to induce vomiting.
