In a significant breakthrough for a cold case, Toronto Police have laid a first-degree murder charge after nearly two decades, utilizing forensic genetic genealogy. Patrick Santos was discovered deceased on September 17, 2006. Investigators collected DNA evidence at the scene, but it did not match any existing databases, leaving the case unsolved for years.
This week, Pierre O'Connor, 43, was arrested and charged in connection with Mr. Santos's death. Detective Sergeant Stephen Smith highlighted that the arrest would not have been possible without investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). This method compares crime scene DNA with public genealogy databases to identify suspects or their family members.
Since 2019, Toronto Police have employed IGG in nearly 40 cases across Ontario, also using it to identify 89 unidentified human remains. The technology's use has raised privacy concerns among watchdogs regarding potential invasiveness, though police maintain its application is strictly regulated and not invasive.
