Clare's Law Sees Surge in Domestic Violence Checks
9 Oct
Summary
- Requests for partner's violent history increased nearly 15%.
- Clare's Law allows public to ask police for disclosure.
- Increased awareness helps prevent domestic abuse escalation.
Cleveland Police have observed a significant rise in applications related to Clare's Law, also known as the domestic violence disclosure scheme. Over the past year, requests for information about a partner's potential history of violent or abusive offending have increased by nearly 15%.
Authorities view this trend as positive, suggesting enhanced public knowledge of how to utilize Clare's Law. This legal right empowers individuals to formally ask police for disclosure regarding any prior violent incidents associated with a current or former partner.
"Greater awareness means more opportunities to identify risk, provide support and help prevent domestic abuse before it escalates," stated Ch Insp Colin Helyer. The scheme enables members of the public to request information about individuals they are in contact with, or even on behalf of friends or relatives, thereby contributing to early intervention and prevention efforts.
