US singer Chris Brown was handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for an assault at London nightclub Tape in Mayfair. The incident occurred in the early hours of February 19, 2023. Brown pleaded guilty to affray, admitting to striking music producer Abraham Diaw twice over the head with a tequila bottle. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the bottle attack as "plainly dangerous" and "intense violence." CCTV footage showed Brown hitting the victim four times with the bottle. Brown and Akinlolu were also ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense within the 12-month suspension period.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the violence, the judge considered Brown's guilty plea, compliance with bail, and the potential impact on his children. The court noted that Brown's risk of further offending was low, and that he had led a law-abiding life since his last conviction in 2013. The dropped charges included assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon.
