China Executes 11 in Telecom Scam Crackdown

China has executed 11 individuals for their involvement in sprawling, transnational telecom scam operations originating from Myanmar's border regions. These criminal gangs lured victims worldwide through fake romantic relationships and fraudulent cryptocurrency investments.
The executed men, sentenced in September by a Wenzhou court, were convicted of crimes including intentional homicide, fraud, and unlawful detention. Their death sentences were reviewed and approved by the Supreme People's Court in Beijing. Among those executed were members of the 'Ming family criminal group,' whose activities resulted in the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens and injuries to many others.
This crackdown is part of Beijing's intensified efforts to cooperate with regional governments to dismantle these fraud compounds. Thousands have been repatriated to China to face trial. The September sentencing also included death sentences with reprieves for five others and prison terms for 23 more suspects. This action follows similar death sentences issued in November for five individuals involved in scam operations in Myanmar's Kokang region.
