China Intensifies Fight Against Bird and Wildlife Crime
2 Apr
Summary
- New campaign targets illegal hunting with guns and drones.
- Police opened over 9,700 criminal cases in a past campaign.
- Focus on online sales of protected wildlife and products.

The Ministry of Public Security in China has announced a forthcoming campaign to intensify crackdowns on crimes related to birds and other wildlife. This initiative will concentrate on illegal hunting methods such as the use of firearms and drones, as well as bird poisoning and the illicit online trade of protected species and their derivatives. These efforts aim to bolster ecological security and public safety.
Previously, a nationwide campaign conducted between August and December led to the initiation of 9,705 criminal cases, with 3,562 specifically involving birds. To further strengthen enforcement, a multi-agency ecological policing mechanism is being developed, supported by professional policing and big data analytics. This coordinated approach has already led to significant successes, including the dismantling of criminal gangs and the arrest of numerous suspects.
