A significant discovery was made in the Cooum river at Pirinjivakkam village in Tiruvallur district, where fifty stone idols were found by local residents on Sunday. The idols, depicting deities such as Vinayaka, Murugan, Ayyappan, and Kali, were stumbled upon by villagers during a routine stroll near the riverbanks.
While some idols show signs of moss growth, their precise age remains undetermined. Residents retrieved the idols and promptly notified the police and panchayat administration. Revenue officials have since taken the idols into their custody, ensuring their safekeeping while awaiting further assessment.
The Tiruvallur collector has confirmed that the state archaeology department has been informed to ascertain the antiquity of the discovered idols. A thorough investigation to trace their origins can only commence once the department conducts its inspection, leaving the mystery of their presence in the river unresolved for now.
