A swift public intervention in Chennai led to the apprehension of a 24-year-old man accused of fleeing with 9 lakh in alleged hawala money. The incident unfolded on Friday in Abiramapuram when the suspect, Syed Mohammed, was reportedly depositing cash at an Indian Overseas Bank ATM. Two individuals on a motorcycle snatched his bag containing the large sum and attempted to escape.
Chased by Mohammed and alerted members of the public, one of the snatchers, identified as Pandiarajan, was apprehended. His accomplice, Mayaan, however, successfully escaped the scene. Authorities recovered the 9 lakh in cash, a sickle, and the motorcycle used in the alleged crime. Police noted that Pandiarajan has a previous murder case registered against him.
The police are currently investigating the source of the hawala money and continuing their efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped accomplice. This incident highlights the swift action taken by citizens to assist law enforcement in apprehending suspects involved in alleged financial crimes.
