17-Year Rivalry Ends in Brutal Chennai Murder

A 46-year-old history-sheeter, identified as Kannan, was fatally attacked on Saturday night in Chennai's Besant Nagar area. Five assailants on two-wheelers reportedly ambushed Kannan near his office on Ellaiamman Koil Street, pursuing and brutally hacking him with knives and machetes before fleeing the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the murder was the result of a 17-year-old rivalry. Kannan and his associates were allegedly involved in the 2009 murder of prime accused Bharani's uncle, Siva. Bharani's father was also murdered in 2016, fueling a long-standing grudge.
The arrested individuals, including Bharani, Rakesh, Naresh, Manikandan, and Hariharan, have been identified from various localities in Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. A murder case has been registered by Sastri Nagar police following a complaint from Kannan's cousin.
In the wake of the murder, Greater Chennai Police commissioner A Amalraj ordered the transfer of Adyar deputy commissioner A C Karthikeyan and Sastri Nagar inspector Rohini to Vacancy Reserve.
