Elderly Man Fatally Punched After Confronting Bridge Throwers

Tragedy struck Cheltenham on Wednesday evening, April 8th, when two teenage boys allegedly assaulted an elderly man, leading to his death. The incident began around 7:30 PM when the 16 and 17-year-old suspects reportedly threw a large branch from the Millennium Bridge towards a passing cyclist, who thankfully was unharmed.
Following the branch-throwing incident, the teenagers encountered a man in his 70s on Honeybourne Way. An altercation reportedly ensued, during which one of the boys punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall. The suspects then fled the scene.
Emergency services transported the man to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where he was in critical condition. He sadly passed away on Friday, April 10th. Police subsequently rearrested the two boys, who had initially been taken into custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, on suspicion of murder.
Gloucestershire Constabulary released CCTV images of the suspects, appealing for public assistance. The force thanked the public for their help in identifying and locating the teenagers, who were arrested in Cheltenham and remain in police custody. Investigations are ongoing, and police are still seeking further witnesses.
