A man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for stealing almost £92,000 from the breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now. Tameem Choudhury, 29, pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges at the Royal Courts of Justice.
While working in the charity's finance department in August 2023, Choudhury intercepted a refund payment of £91,966.72. He used his corporate email to send his personal bank details to the payer, leading to the funds being transferred to his account.
Choudhury spent the stolen money on wedding and honeymoon costs, luxury goods including a £14,000 ring, and personal debts. Evidence of his financial distress and the diversion of funds to cover debts and flights was found on his phone. Approximately £42,866 was recovered after his bank flagged suspicious activity.
Breast Cancer Now reported the incident, leading to Choudhury's arrest in June of the previous year. The charity stated it has conducted a thorough review of its procedures and that all stolen funds have been recovered without any financial loss to the organization.
