Summary
- Killer admitted to shooting charity CEO Gret Glyer 10 times.
- Judge accepted insanity plea, avoiding jail time for the perpetrator.
- Family fears release of perpetrator from mental health facility.

Joshua Daniel Danehower, 37, has been spared jail time following a judge's acceptance of his insanity plea for the murder of DonorSee founder Gret Glyer, 32. The incident occurred in June 2022 at Glyer's Fairfax, Virginia residence.
Danehower admitted to shooting Glyer 10 times in the presence of his wife, while their two children slept nearby. Prosecutors revealed that Danehower had meticulously planned the murder, detailing his intentions in a document titled 'The Plan,' which included escape strategies and disposal of evidence.
Despite the clear evidence of premeditation and the victim's family's strong objections, Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Shannon accepted the insanity plea. This ruling means Danehower will be committed to a mental health facility.
Glyer's family voiced profound concerns about potential future releases, stating they fear for their lives and the community's safety. They criticized the justice system, asserting that premeditated murder without punitive punishment undermines hope in the criminal justice system.
Under Virginia law, Danehower will undergo annual evaluations for the first five years, followed by biennial reviews, each presenting a legal opportunity for his release if deemed no longer a threat. The Commonwealth's Attorney acknowledged the family's valid hurt and disappointment, noting that two independent clinical experts found the defendant legally insane at the time of the offense.
